About This Spot

Stepping into Shin-jidai Osaka-Tenma feels like slipping into a well-loved neighborhood spot where the buzz is forged by genuine, everyday connections rather than tourist pomp. Nestled in the quieter reaches of Tenjinbashi, this izakaya welcomes both regular locals and curious travelers with its lively yet unpretentious rhythm — a comforting hum of animated chatter, clinking glasses, and the occasional sizzle from the open grill.

The pace here is easygoing but never dull; the room fills quickly as the after-work crowd gathers to unwind with affordable drinks and hearty plates made for sharing. There’s a casual warmth in how young, passionate staff move around with practiced efficiency, their smiles and small talk stitching together the communal fabric that defines the place.

Food at Shin-jidai is a joyful dive into Osaka’s love for skewers, fried delights, and spirited flavors — especially their famed crispy chicken skin, which manages to be light and addictive all at once, inviting one more bite as effortlessly as a familiar tune. The menu encourages an adventurous spirit, trusting guests to explore tastes beyond the usual, whether it’s dipping into garlicky butter notes or savoring the delicate balance of house spices on each bite. Drinks arrive cheap and cheerful, with happy hour specials that keep the cheers flowing well into the early evening hours.

Here, no pretenses are needed, just a readiness to settle in, share a laugh, and let the simple joy of great company and humble, thoughtfully crafted food do the rest. Shin-jidai isn’t just a place to eat — it’s one to belong, even if only for the evening.

Tenma not a usual area for tourists, most are locals but it has a good vibe and great food. Happy hour is the best, from 11am-6pm weekdays!!!! Beer and lemon sour are only JPY90. Their famous chicken skin skewers are only JPY50 each, its very crispy and doesn't feel fatty or oily, very addictive. Since there was no English menu, we accidentally ordered raw chicken and it was alright, the cooked Karrage and chicken skewers was much much better. Just kick back and relax and eat some skewers and drink lots!!! Just realised they are a chain izakaya and have other locations. We did go and visit the Shibuya one but they didn't have happy hour, but beer at normal price was only JPY190, which is cheaper than convenient stores. Will def visit again

Legendary fried "chicken skin" is highly recommended. Good place to hang out with friends with budget cost. Although they don't have multi languages menu but why not try whatever you're curious:) Drinks are cheap with some trade off of taste.

Lower price beer and food with high quality, a recommended izakaya for chilling. It is better to go early as normally the shop is full around 8-9pm. Highly recommend their fried chicken skin, it is so surprisingly tasty, you can taste the spices on it and some sweet taste. Most importantly, the beer 生啤 only costs 190¥ 90¥ for happy hours from 11am to 6pm), which is super affordable.

There is a Starter Dish at charge. Everything was all right except for the beer which was flat. If tapped beer is flat then there's no point drinking. So next is highball, diluted and flat. Everything else is fine, the taste of food was reasonable. We had 2 drinks each and left in 35mins. The pricing is fair and it truly is crowded. If you are willing to wait. Then you can give this place a try.

A good izakaya, very rustic looking and via QR-code the entire order process is also quite smooth. The only gripe I had was the fresh tofu; the bonito flakes topping the tofu tasted like old wood smells, very off-putting. Everything else tasted wonderful and the peach shoju drink was delish. Other than that the service was very kind and quickly offered me an English menu, though most restaurants in Japan would act the same. Honestly a solid choice for dinner.

Tasty food, fast, cheap, late night. Skin skewers were incredibly good, rock chicken was tasty, other skewers were also okay.
